Vintage Watch

WHY BUY A VINTAGE WATCH

The men in my family were left vintage pocket watches handed down by my father who loved pocket watches, wrist watches, vest chains, stick pins and all the adornments that the 30’s and 40’s offered a man. I was thrilled that they realized the worth, quality and appearance associated with a watch from another era. These watches are now family heirlooms.

My son, born in 1974, during the beginning of the quartz revolution had never seen a mechanical watch and when he did, he thought the movement was so “alive” and finely crafted that he resolved never to wear another quartz watch.

A mechanical watch (which by definition must have more than 120 parts) is powered by a mainspring within what is called a barrel; the mainspring is wound by hand or automatically by a rotor’ transmitting power to a complicated set of interconnected wheels; this is called the gear train. This oscillation provides the “tick” of the mechanical watch. The rotor on an automatic watch incorporates a weight which swings backwards and forwards whenever the wrist moves – converts to a rotary motion which winds the mainspring.

Besides the vintage appearance and charm of these watches, many collectors enjoy the complications of the older chronographs, calendars, alarms and of course the military watches. Vintage watch from fine Swiss and US makers generally hold their worth and often appreciate in value many times over.

Young urban professionals are realizing they can distinguish themselves by wearing a rare vintage timepiece.

Many of the older established watch houses have reverted to the classic vintage styles of wrist watches in order to try and capture that modern element of buyers who appreciate yesterday’s styles but in a brand new watch. Prices of these new watches however are much higher than of the actual vintage watch available today.

Bulova Watch

The Bulova Watch

In the late 1800's a young man by the name of Joseph Bulova began selling the watches he made in a small jewelry store in New York City. It did not take long for the public to begin to realize the unique quality of his work, and sales of Bulova watches skyrocketed. The Bulova watch company was founded in 1923 and is one of the most respected names there has ever been in the watch industry.

Although Bulova began in a rather small, unassuming jewelry store where he offered items such as discount gold jewelry as well as watches, it was the beginning of an empire that has lasted to this day. By the early 1900's the company had a world wide presence, and opened manufacturing facilities in Switzerland as well. This has played a part in the Swiss watch being noted for supreme quality.

During the depression years the Bulova Watch Company sold their goods to customers on credit and faith that they would be repaid. Though this was considered a risky move by many in the business community, it ultimately paid off and people appreciated this approach to doing business in such hard times.

Credited with the invention of the Accutron technology, Bulova watches were the first in history to accurately and reliably keep time via electronics, as opposed to simple winding mechanisms. The company has even had its mark left on the moon, which has played a part in information transmission since the original moon landing.

For many people there comes a sense of pride along with the ownership of one of these history rich watches. With today's Bulova watches you will find an absolutely vast array of choices in both design and style. Many people prefer the self winding type of watch because it is essentially maintenance free. On the upper side of the scale, these watches may be made out of such desirable materials as 14K white gold and inlaid with natural round cut diamonds. Although most people think of electric watches as just getting their power from small, replaceable batteries found within the watches themselves, Bulova watches pioneered the quartz technology; and this technology has played a major role in the development and eventual perfecting of integrated circuits.

Watch Man

Diamonds, Watches, Charm Bracelets Measure Our Lives As We Hurry - Are We There Yet?

The diamond in the rough of the ancient night watch could charm all by being the best new guard against the terrors of the night, from dusk to dawn. As long as they knew their tribe or village was well cared over during the darkness by the legendary Night Watch Man, who continues today. No related name has such importance during the day time, as all could see and be on watch for any enemies or wild beasts. Even today the Night Watch Man is less concerned with his wrist watch as he is of his Watch over that which he has been employed to secure and protect.

The measure of day time only really took form by Roman times as the Sun Dial, which like Stonehenge and others charted the course of the sun across the sky. The first mechanical clocks were medieval and large, with many interlocking gears of varying size and length of time to complete a circuit: thus the hour gears, the minute gears, and much later the second’s gears. These were recalculated for use at sea in various forms to allow more precise navigation. As they shrunk to watch size the aristocracy had them adorned with diamonds, and the watch might be secured in a necklace or a bracelet.

By the time of Napoleon the pocket watch was in use among the elites, and he surely would have shared some precious diamond studded watch with his beloved Josephine and a more sturdy watch to his generals, to steady and confirm the times of precise attack, from any quarter. The Napoleon use of precise timing to out maneuver enemy forces was legendary, and he did watch the time, very carefully. Whether you plan to out offer a diamond bracelet, a bracelet, or a lump of coal to your beloved, how you watch yourself with her is a very important matter. Web sites now have the huge range the main street watch shop could never hope to match, in variety or auction bid prices. Bring the fun over to your place, better than the mall: only your friends, guys watch the game, gals check out their hundred story department stores all at auction prices. Place a few of your own low price bids, read some health stories, have some laughs, click back in and find if you want it, it's yours. That's when you wait until his team scores, say honey I need our card just a moment, great little item here, better than an electric blanket.

History of Invicta Watch

Who is Invicta Watch Group?

Swiss watches have been highly coveted by many parts of the world, and Invicta watches picked up in popularity. In 1991, the descendants of the original Invicta watch name re-formed the company. Today, Invicta watch group is dedicated to bringing you high quality watches that are still affordable and beautiful in design – the same commitment that Invicta Watch was known for more than a century ago.

Timex Watch

It is Time You Owned a Timex Watch

The Timex watch has been a staple wrist watch here in the United States since 1950; in fact, although Timex watches are marketed worldwide its greatest market base is in the United States and Canada. The momentum in the sales of the Timex watch skyrocketed when Timex illustrated the watches durability through advertisements that lay claim to the phrase "It takes a licking and keeps on ticking."

Though it is alright to wear Timex watches to formal events such as; musicals, movies, or other types of entertainment, Timex's catchphrase for the watch gave people the permission, so to speak, to wear this watch during the most abusive journeys and in job settings such as construction sites. What made the watch so strong and durable are the craftsmanship, the quality, and dedication that are put into every single Timex watch.

Timex's honing and establishment of a watch that was durable wasn't its only goal for the watch, because what good is a watch that endures damage under high contact or infliction, but does not continue to keep time. One must not forget that Timex watches are far from just a durable piece of equipment, as they also tell time quite efficiently. Accuracy is important when it comes to a wristwatch and Timex prides itself in upholding to that standard for its watches. Timex has maintained its market lead by keeping in stride with consumers demand for watches that serve as fashion accessories, sports wear, and symbols of identity. Timex's invention of the iron man speed and distance system was the first of its kind, which utilized GPS technology. This technology enabled the watch to tap into a GPS's satellites, which are equipped with atomic clocks, making it possible for runners, skiers, kayakers, and mountain bikers to ascertain speed and distance data with near-perfect accuracy.

Timex put the "T" in tough when it comes to their Timex watches and because of the quality and reliability of their watches and the fact that their watches fit every facet of your life it is about time every member of your household owned a Timex watch.

Digital Watch

The History of the Digital Watch

The Electric Watch

The Hamilton Electric Watch

In 1957, The Hamilton Watch Co of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, produced the world's first electric watch. The Hamilton Electric Watch kept time with a traditional balance-wheel mechanism which had been used in timepieces for hundreds of years and was therefore no more accurate than any other watch. Although people loved the fact that they no longer had to wind the watch, it would stop when the electric contacts became worn - which happened not long into the watch's lifespan. It was a headache that the Hamilton repair department continually faced until the watch was updated in 1961.

Accutron by Bulova

At around this time, Bulova provided the next big advance in electric timepieces with its Accutron watch in 1960.

Refining the Quartz Movement

Japanese Interpretation

While the Europeans were playing one-upmanship with their various techniques, Seiko was simultaneously taking a fresh look at quartz and so it was the Japanese company who unveiled the world's first quartz wristwatch - the 35SQ Astron Watch - in Tokyo on 25 December 1969. It had a plain face, was chunky (unlike the slim line Swiss mechanical watches) and also suffered so many technical difficulties that Seiko ended up recalling it after only producing just 100 watches. This competition led to slimmer, more accurate, less power-hungry watches.

The Digital Display

Pulsar and the LED Display

In 1972, Hamilton produced the first watch with a digital display. By pressing a button on the side, the time was displayed on a red numeric display, caused by a light emitting diode (LED) display. Before the watch companies could 'do away with' the analogue watches though, they first had to bring down the price of the digital successor. Texas Instruments brought the digital watch to the masses much as Henry Ford had brought the car. In 1975 they produced the first LED watch with a retail price of only $20; the following year this was halved. This level of competition saw Pulsar lose $6 million and find itself sold to competitors twice in the space of a year, eventually becoming a subsidiary of Seiko and reverting to making analogue quartz watches.

The Liquid Crystal Display

Digital watches even in the late 1970s still necessitated two hands - one to wear the watch and the other to press the button to turn on the LED display. Liquid Crystal Display first became possible in 1972 with the invention of the Twisted Nematic Liquid Crystal Display (TNLCD), following decades of research into liquid crystals at Hull University. It allowed a lower power level to reflect light onto a passive screen. It had a six figure display. As LCD used less power than LED, the display was permanent, thus allowing for the addition of seconds to the display.

The Swiss finally embraced quartz technology but left the digital field to the Japanese and Americans settling instead to make elegant analogue quartz watches.

The Development of Digital Watches

The 1980s saw further developments in the digital watch. Technology was coming on leaps and bounds and if it could be miniaturized enough the Japanese were putting it into a digital watch. In 1987, Casio produced a watch that could dial your phone number and Citizen unveiled one that would react to your voice.

The 1990s saw a refinement to solar-powered digital watches. The meant that they could generate more power for longer periods of time. 1995 saw Timex release a Data link watch which allowed the wearer to download information from a computer to their wrist.

Watch Dial

Movado: The Museum Watch Dial as an Icon

That signature is its Museum watch dial, characterized by a single dot that marks 12 o'clock. The dial is a symbol of many things: the sun at high noon, sophistication and artistry in design. It is, in essence, what transformed Movado watches from fashion accessories into icons.

Swiss watchmaker Movado is known for its excellence in both technological and artistic innovation. The Museum Watch dial did not get its name until after the Museum of Modern Art in New York selected the design for a permanent collection in 1960. When considered as a piece of art, Movado's simple design falls into the category of a minimalist work. The most basic elements of a watch include the hands and a simple reference point. That is exactly what the model that the Museum Watch follows.

It creates a striking contrast when compared with other luxury watches. In the shadow of the Museum Watch dial, an ordinary watch face looks cluttered.

In early production, the Museum Watch dial was crafted on a black dial with a gold dot. The Museum Watch dial continues to play an important role in modern Movado designs, such as its Amorosa and Fiero Collections. The various Movado Collections feature different band styles, watch shapes and sizes, but the distinctive Museum Watch employed in them is a unifying element. Movado continues to produce a Museum Collection that is dedicated to preserving minimalism by featuring the classic Museum Watch dial and simple leather straps.

The dial represents a certain level of sophistication and artistry that is an integral part of Movado's ongoing relationship with the performing and visual arts. Brand ambassadors like trumpeter Wynton Marsalis and dancer-choreographer Mikhail Baryshinikov have played an important part in maintaining the reputation of the Museum Watch dial.

Art and Movado enjoy an interdependent relationship and it all began with the creation of a revolutionary dial design. There is one thing aspect of the Museum Watch dial that is timeless and will never change. That is its historical place as an icon among timekeeping pieces. The dial, in conjunction with the other fine elements in a Movado timepiece, transforms a watch into a work of art.

Diamond Watch

The Popularity of a Joe Rodeo Diamond Watch

The Joe Rodeo watch, often referred to as a JoJo watch, is becoming increasingly popular with today's younger professional and celebrity set. As diamond watches become more common amongst such people, they are seeking ways of distinguishing themselves from the rest of the crowed, and a JoJo watch is one way they have found of doing so.

Despite the fact that they still represent what is possibly the most exclusive form of jewelry available, diamond watches are rapidly becoming one of the most sought after accessories or jewelry items on the market. A Joe Rodeo watch is amongst the most fashionable and exclusively elegant diamond watches available. JoJo watches are not only manufactured to the highest standards possible, including a precision movement and sapphire crystals, but a Joe Rodeo diamond watch represents true elegance and style.

A diamond watch is not merely an attractive item of jewelry of which you can be justly proud, but a watch that has been created using some of the most technologically advanced movements and the most exclusive precious stones will almost certainly be the most accurate and reliable watch you have ever owned. Although many people would say that they have purchased a diamond watch for both its accuracy and elegance, it would be true to say that there is always a third reason for the purchase of a diamond watch for either a man or a woman.

The wearing of a diamond watch says a tremendous amount about the person who wears it, including their success and status as well as their style. A well cut diamond will catch any available light and reflect it in a dazzling and unmissable display. Most diamond watches, and certainly any Joe Rodeo watch, will include far more than a single diamond, possibly including many dozens.

Can you begin to imagine the magnificent display of light and color that such a watch would present, and which will almost certainly draw attention whenever your watch catches the light? A Joe Rodeo watch comes in many flavors, and whatever your style or taste, and whatever kind of message or impression you wish to convey through the wearing of such an exquisite diamond watch, you will be certain to find at least one JoJo watch which will be exactly the style that you are looking for. From the omissible and unmistakable Iced Out watches with the sleek sheen of diamonds encrusted throughout the face and bracelet to the exquisitely feminine pink diamond Joe Rodeo diamond watch available for ladies, or the classic elegance of the leather strapped Tourbillion watch, the JoJo watch range manages to combine classic elegance with modern style.

Today, however, it has become increasingly popular to present a diamond watch as a gift at some significant occasion, such as the first anniversary, the first Christmas, a significant birthday or the birth of a child. As you should be able to imagine, the message and significance that a diamond watch conveys will be impossible to misunderstand or to forget.

In the fast and furious world of business nothing shouts success quite as clearly and elegantly as a beautiful diamond watch adorning the wrist of the businessman or woman in charge. A Joe Rodeo watches or a JoJo diamond watches will not only help to convey this message and impression of success but will be able to do so in a way which also exudes tremendous style and flair.

Jewelry Watch

Proper Cleaning and Maintenance of a Jewelry Watch

Watches are considered jewelry and they should be treated like they are. A jewelry watch is available for most men or women and sometimes even children.

The same precautions should be made for a jewelry watch. Many watches may have silver or diamond studs and they are expensive to replace or repair if damage occurs. If you notice that your watch is not functioning properly and may need repairs you should take it to an expert. If dust particles or other debris gets trapped inside the mechanical portion of the watch, it may continue to not properly work and additional damage may occur. A jewelry watch is not a cheap watch and taking the watch to a professional can be a wise investment in the long run.

Typically a jewelry watch will be purchased form a jewelry store. Many jewelry stores will offer a warranty or a service package for their products. It is recommend that you purchase both, if they are available for your watch. A service package will generally allow you to bring your jewelry watch in for regularly checkups. A jewelry watch will traditional come with a display case or gift box. You may want to consider storing your jewelry watch in one of those items at night. This will generally prevent dust and other dirt particles from gathering on the surface of your watch. If dust does gather on the watch surface, it is important that you try and wipe it off with a soft dry cloth. If you have a marking or spot on the jewelry watch that will need to be washed, try taking a slightly damp cloth to the surface. It is advised that you only use a soft cloth to prevent the jewelry watch surface from being scratched.

Some jewelry watches are worth in excess of over one thousand dollars and quite frankly it is not worth damaging your watch while trying to cleaning it.

Vintage Watches

A Collector's Guide to Buying Vintage Watches

Collecting vintage watches is a growing hobby in most parts of the western world. One of the most frustrating aspects of collecting vintage watches is the number of fakes, Franken watches and fraudsters one encounters in pursuit of this noble, but increasingly costly, passion.

Caveat Emptor, rarity and product knowledge steer the purchasing behaviors of astute collectors in any collecting field and these three principles are particularly important when purchasing vintage watches on-line and through bricks and mortar dealers.

Franken watches describe the practice of taking parts from different watches of the same caliber series and 'creating' a new or better pedigree of movement. In some countries of Europe they are called 'Wedding' watches.
  1. Housing a different movement in a genuine case or re-dialed model. If you are interested in collecting a particular brand of watch, get to know the caliber numbers of movements that power particular models.
  2. Using a similar movement series and replacing the part that has the caliber number. This is prevalent in watch brands that have numerous models and where the top line models fetch higher prices that the cheaper models.
  3. Placing a high end dial and movement in the wrong case. Many of the higher end vintage watches have case back numbers that can be checked with serial numbers to see if they match.
  4. Replacing worn hands and crowns with non-genuine hands and crowns and claiming the watch is 100 percent authentic. A common problem with many vintage models that reduces the value of the watch. On-line forums are a great way to acquire and swap pictures.
  5. Badly executed dials and re-dials. A bad re-dial will wipe as much as 30 percent off the value of the watch. Again pictures and the help of other collectors are invaluable in making sure you have an authentic watch.
  6. Replacing numerous worn parts in genuine models with genuine parts. Knowledgeable and pernickety collectors look for signs of color variation on the movement and often avoid watches that are not of one color hue. Ask the vendor for a detailed report on the history of servicing of the watch and its current condition.
  7. When examining a good quality picture of the watch movement, and always ask for pictures if you are buying on the internet, look for any discoloration of the surfaces of plates and bridges. Look for any signs of corrosion or parts of the watch that do not match in color, particularly rotor bridges and the part of the watch that contains the caliber or serial numbers.
  8. Examine the movement for burred screw heads and scrapes and damage to the movement plates or bridges, which are sure signs of inexpert work, or at least indicate the movement was separate from the case for some time before a case was found to match. Checks for surface discoloration on the movement plates, blotches, corrosion, or parts that don't match the rest of the movement patina.
  9. Examine the case back to determine whether the watch has had a hard life. Beware of excessive polishing that takes the sharpness away from the edges of the watch case, as that again indicates considerable wear and tear overall and devalues the watch.
  10. A watch that has obviously had a hard life indicates carelessness towards its maintenance and irregularity in servicing. Generally speaking, mechanical watches should be serviced every three to five years, and it is not difficult to detect a watch that has been neglected because the signs of neglect are obvious to the naked eye.
  11. Badly discolored watches with scratches, gouges to the movement, highly polished case backs and inexpertly refinished dials are sure signs of the amateur watchmaker at work and should be avoided. Watches that are regularly serviced will have their seals replaced at service and should show few signs of moisture having entered the case. Remember rust under a dial cannot be seen and flaky dials can be a sign of hidden problems underneath.

Antique Watches

Buyer's guide to antique watches

When it comes to buying antique watches, you can NEVER be over informed. There are hundreds of thousands of antique watches out there that all have their own rarity, desirability, and model.

Here are the rules that must be considered when you look at these valuable and decorative pieces:
  1. Know the watch you want to buy. If you are, for example, looking to buy a "Railroad watch", what do you define as a railroad watch? Is your definition a watch used on a railroad, or is it a watch that meets or exceeds the standards set by the railroad companies that would issue these valuable time pieces?
  2. Find the value of the piece. If you want to buy a valuable watch, I would suggest you purchase a Watch Price Guide.
  3. Condition is everything. First things first, inspect the watch "plates". When I refer to "plates", I refer to the metal plates that hold the train, jewels, and balance staff, or the gears and the other parts, in the watch and allow it to function. I will explain some of the terminology used for watches so that even if you are a novice, you will sound like you actually know something when you go to buy your new antique watch.
Second, did a price check, where I looked in my price guide book to find it's value (Note: In a price book, watches are listed by company first alphabetically, then by the size of the watch, then the model for the size is listed in alphabetical order) so that I wouldn't over pay for the item.

Balance Staff: The brain of a watch, without it there would be no way of it to function. Case: The case of a watch, or what encases the movement of a watch, in order to protect the mechanisms from damage. The 3 main types of cases that you will encounter are swing out cases, 'open face' cases, and hunter cases.
  • Crown: The thing on top that you wind the watch with.
  • Crystal: The glass that protects the face on a watch.
  • Dial: The face of a watch.
  • Plates: The plates are things in the back of the watch that you see holding in the train, mainspring, and balance staff.
  • Train: The gears of a watch.

Why do people buy watches?

There are many reasons why people buy watches and this article will discuss what some of these reasons are.

Watches have become very popular in the UK. Owning a watch generally means that people know the time and knowing the time means that people can stay on top of all their daily activities. There are also many people who have children too, and managing other people as well as yourself can be at times quite tricky. So owning a watch is of great importance.

There are many places people can buy watches. High streets can also get very busy for a similar reason. Shoppers can also log on to the internet and shop online. The internet has been an ever increasing place for shoppers as it provides a very easy-to-use and user-friendly service for its users. As mentioned above, people always need a watch in order to be aware of the time whenever they need to know it. However, people tend not to buy watches all the time. Customers therefore tend to buy watches at particular times during the year. Christmas is one of the most likely times of year as watches make for very good presents for other people. This is not always the case however, as watches also make for very good birthday presents and people have birthdays right they way through the year.

Some people also buy watches because they want to look fashionable. As there is such a high demand for people who want to buy watches, retailers aim to produce as many watches as possible. Some people however, crave more than just a watch to tell the time. What they want is to wear a watch that looks fashionable, trendy and stylish. Gold Watches

Take Care of Your Gold Watches

The luster and warm tone of gold never appears to go off out of fashion and style. Gold is the softest metal and if kept with proper care, it lasts forever. This is the reason that there has been much demand for the gold watches too.

To enhance the strength and durability of the gold watches, several other metals are included, such as silver and copper. The buoyancy of gold watches is calculated from its karat measure, which usually ranges from ten karats to twenty-four karats or sometimes pure gold. The pure gold watches are much more valuable and are superior in comparison to any other metal.

It is essential to take special precautions in order to prevent gold watches from getting dented or even scratched. Always remember not to put on the gold watches against other gems or metals since the friction between them may result in impressions and nicks. Gold watches are specifically susceptible to dents and scratches because of the reality that the gold watches are put over the wrist. Gold watches get easily damaged by certain hard gems like the diamonds, thereby it is an ideal option to store the gold watches separately from various other jewelry pieces. Another good option is to keep these gold watches in soft pouches.

Chemicals are harmful for gold watches, particularly chlorine that can deteriorate its structure. Therefore, while going in the swimming pools or the hot tubs, always take out your gold watch. One must place Gold watches at a safer place while cleaning or applying hairspray, makeup or even perfume. Eventually, even perspiration can cause gold watches to lack luster.

Large numbers of jewelers recommend cleaning the gold watches once in a month in order to maintain their new and novel look. In order to clean gold watches, apply a solution made with well diluted detergent (liquid) and Luke warm water. Softly clean the watch from a soft clean cloth or use the infant toothbrush. While cleaning, make sure to avoid contact of water with the inner components and the face of the gold watch.

The commercial gold watch cleaners are easily accessible in the marketplace but ensure that they are specifically intended for the gold watches. To plan a professional gold watch cleaning, it is feasible to go to a local or nearby jewelry store.

Gold watches are valuable and must be kept far away from small gaps and drains at home or a secure place. Gold is priceless metal, which exudes lavishness and depreciates rarely.

Watch Mens

Guide to Buying a Watch Mens

Watches are one of the most important accessories for a man. Because the Watches of a man can make a promise to meet with the appropriate time. Even in India there is the statement "A man always respected when he is able to maintain on time from all the action and commitment." While there is a wide array of men's watches to choose from, there are certain facets that make up the perfect watch. Here are a few things to consider when buying a watch mens

The Face

Another thing that gets me when it comes to watches is the size of the watch face relative to the wrist that's wearing it. On bigger men a standard watch face can end up looking like a ladies watch. Watch makers are continually coming out with watches that have larger than standard faces. I personally love bigger watch faces whether you're a big guy or not, it's a great look.

Basic Watch Features

Chronograph watches have both timekeeping and stopwatch functions available. Analog watches show the time and stopwatch functions, both kept with analog hands. Analog-digital chronographs are standard analog watches with a digital display operating separately from the standard analog watch with permanent center seconds.

Water Resistance

It's a great feature if you shower or swim with your watch on, but let's be honest, who really does that? Some watches will resist moisture from accidental splashing, rain, sweat, etc. and others will resist moisture up to certain depths such as 50 or 100 meters.

The Color of the Face and Strap

There is a trend to have dials and straps in exciting colors. I've seen it from cheap to expensive watches. Save the trendy colors for a second or third watch if you must.

Watch Care

You should clean and service the watch every two years, and replace batteries and seals at this time. Remove the watch for hot showers or games of golf, and take the watch to get serviced if moisture gets under the crystal. Mechanical watches should be wound at the same time every day.

Big Name Watch Brands

Rolex still remains the world's standard in men's watches because of the solid craftsmanship and perhaps because of the powerful resale market. International Watch Company (IWC) - The IWC developed the Caliber 52 movement and produces technically advanced models like the Advance, programmed for five hundred years.
